Thunderbird Falls
Nestled in the heart of the Ouachita National Forest in southeastern Oklahoma, Broken Bow is a hidden gem that captivates visitors with its natural beauty and tranquility. In Beavers Bend State Park there are hundreds of honking trails but there are a few that lead to beautiful hidden waterfalls. One is thunderbird falls which is a beautiful waterfall tucked into the forest. At the bottom is a small pool of crystal clear water.
Go down 259A south entrance to park. Drive about 2 miles and turn left on the dirt/rock road. Go until you reach the end of the road with a gate (just over one mile) That is the entrance to a property that is private. Get out of your car and go almost directly across the road from where you park your car. The path is somewhat hard to see. Travel about 1/4 mile and you will come to a worn trail. Turn right and take that trail. Take that trail all the way until you will see a path lead down towards the river. It is steep so you might need a walking stick. Go down to the river bed and turn right…you will go a short distance and then you will go right along side a small creek that runs into the larger creek. You will likely hear the water splashing…that’s Thunderbird Falls.

Beaver’s Bend State Park Forest Heritage Center
The Forest Heritage Center in Beavers Bend State Park, now known as “The Wood Art Capital of Oklahoma,” is a museum-in-the-round and features unique displays and large dioramas painted by Smokey Bear artist, Harry Rossoll. These dioramas tell the story of prehistoric forests, Caddo Indians, paper-making in the South, 1940s lumbering and forest appreciation. Each diorama is accompanied by a taped narration. Visitors to the Forest Heritage Center will discover unique wood art, historical documents, antique forestry tools, homestead memorabilia and a research library filled with books, periodicals and other materials pertaining to forestry.

Cedar Bluff Trail
Located across from Dogwood Campground in the Beavers Bend State Park, the Cedar Bluff trail runs in an approximately 1 mile loop. The trail is designed to be hiked in a clockwise manner. Begin to your left and at each junction turn right and you will come out where you started. The trail is marked with blue on white tree blazes. This nature trail is considered easy grade with a hill climb.
This trail took us immediately uphill toward the beautiful overlook. It’s very straightforward and led to a first section that has a slightly obscured view of the overlook that’s still worth taking a look at. Then, we continued on, to a more obvious overlook with a bench bolted to the top of the overlook. We sat up there for several minutes, we listened to the water flow and saw blue herons gracefully take off from the swamp-like tree grove at the edge of the river. This trail is super short, but you can make a loop out of it to get a little extra mileage in.

Friends Trail
Located in Beavers Bend State Park, the Friends Trail is the perfect place to connect with nature with a scenic experience. The Friends Trail is the first new trail to be added to the park in 15 years. Friends Trail begins at Spillway Creek, below the dam and makes an approximate 1.5 mile loop.
Friends Trail is an intermediate trail where you can expect rugged terrain with rocky and steep inclines. The trail leads to panoramic views of the lake from the top of a ridge.

Spillway Overlook
In the 1960s, the Mountain Fork River was dammed by the Army Corps of Engineers to form Broken Bow Lake. They created a spillway to release water from the lake into the river, and the stretch of river below the spillway is stunning. This is a perfect spot to photo people who are fishing or to focus in on the water with mossy cliffs in the background.

Crystal Point
Crystal Point is a spot along Beavers Bend Lake that is accessible by car. Features a rocky beach, rock faces, and incredible sunrise and sunset views. The road leading to this point also has many pull-offs that are equally scenic! This is a popular spot for swimmers and families during the day.
